Leather is unforgiving in the best possible way — it holds its shape, molds to your body, and lasts for years. But that also means getting the right size from the start is critical. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure yourself for made-to-order leather clothing so your piece fits perfectly from day one.
Why Sizing Matters More for Leather
Unlike cotton or stretch fabrics, leather has very little give initially. A pair of leather pants that's too tight won't stretch to accommodate you — and one that's too loose won't shrink to fit. Made-to-order leather is crafted to your exact measurements, which is why accurate measuring is the single most important step before you order. It also helps to understand which type of leather you're ordering, as different hides have different levels of natural stretch.
The 4 Key Measurements You Need
Use a soft measuring tape and measure directly over your skin or a single thin layer of clothing. Have someone help you for the most accurate results.
1. Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist — typically about an inch above your belly button. Keep the tape snug but not tight. This is your true waist, not your trouser waist size.
2. Hips / Seat
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, usually about 8–10 inches below your natural waist. This is the most critical measurement for leather pants and shorts.
3. Inseam (for pants and shorts)
Measure from your crotch to the floor along the inside of your leg. For shorts, we'll use this to calculate the correct length based on your preferred style.
4. Chest (for jackets and shirts)
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape horizontal and under your arms. Don't flex — breathe normally and keep the tape comfortably snug.
How to Take Measurements at Home
- Use a soft fabric measuring tape, not a metal one.
- Measure in inches or centimeters — note which unit you're using when you submit your order.
- Take each measurement twice to confirm accuracy.
- Measure over fitted underwear or thin clothing — not over jeans or thick layers.
- Stand naturally — don't suck in or puff out.
Made-to-Order vs. Standard Sizing
Standard sizing uses average body proportions that may not match yours. Made-to-order leather is cut specifically to your measurements, which means:
- A better fit across the seat, thighs, and waist simultaneously
- The correct length for your height and proportions
- No need to compromise between waist and hip fit
If you fall between standard sizes or have a longer torso, wider hips, or longer legs than average, made-to-order is almost always the better choice.
How Leather Stretches and Breaks In
New leather will feel snug — that's normal and expected. Over the first few wears, genuine leather softens and molds to your body, creating a custom fit that no off-the-rack garment can replicate. As a general rule:
- Leather pants and shorts will loosen slightly at the waist and thighs after 3–5 wears.
- Leather jackets and shirts soften across the shoulders and chest.
- If a piece feels uncomfortably tight (not just snug), it's too small — don't rely on break-in to fix a sizing error.
